Controversial Issues in Social Studies Curriculum Essay
In the article, ââ¬Å"Controversial Issues and Democratic Discourseâ⬠, Hess (2011) explored the implications of incorporating Controversial Issues (CI) into Social Studies lesson. She included multifarious research findings from studies conducted in Social Studies classrooms in US and delved further to discuss its implications on teachers and students. This review aims to summarize the main research findings and contextualise its implication on the teaching and learning of Social Studies in Singapore. According to studies carried out in US schools, research findings showed that CI discussions were actively carried out in Social Studies classrooms where students claimed to have discussed about their differing opinions on political and socialâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦On one hand, Hess explained that the discerning process in selecting appropriate issues is critically important as another main research finding has shown that there are evidence of students being disengaged from the discussion because the issue has personal relevance that are deemed as sensitive to them. Research studies surfaced the various personal reasons such as being wary of the judgment of their peers, issues that evoked anger and anxiety and also subliminal segregations in class that teachers need to be aware of. Nevertheless, studies provided alternatives such as online participation; and it has also proven that studentsââ¬â¢ political engagement is enhanced when they are able to grasp the ideology of the normalization of conflict and are familiar to the concept of accepting differing opinions in discussion. On the other hand, further studies have shown that the inclusion of CI discussions develops civic outcomes and democratic values as students display increasing tolerance towards others over time. In another study, it was discovered that students are able to remember and comprehend issue fully when it is situated in a meaningful context as students are able to reach out to theShow MoreRelatedThe Importance Of Critical Race Theory1358 Words à |à 6 Pagesessentialist approach to curriculum, John Deweyââ¬â¢s call for progressive reform and student-centered learning, and Paolo Freireââ¬â¢s call for an education that advocates social change and the destruction of social oppression, education pundits found themselves stuck between different goals, outcomes, and possibilities for teaching in a multicultural way. Olaudah Equiano Essay Example For Students
Olaudah Equiano Essay An ironsmith, ship steward, crewman, cook, clerk, navigator, amateur scientist, and even a hairdresser. These are all jobs that Olaudah Equiano held during his lifetime. He has been called the most influential African writer in both Africa, America and Britain before the Civil War, and was born in Essaka, Nigeria sometime during 1745 (ONeale, 153). His family was part of the Ibo tribe, which was located in the North Ika Ibo region of Essaka. In his earliest years, Olaudah Equiano was trained in the art of war. His daily exercises included shooting and throwing javelins. As he states in his autobiography, two men and a woman, who came over the walls while the rest of the family was away, abducted Olaudah and his sister in 1756 (Equiano, 356). He was only eleven years old. The two of them would only be reunited when Equiano was sold a second time. They did not remain together that long because he would be sold again. Olaudah Equiano would eventually be sold to a man by the name of Mich ael Henry Pascal, an officer of the British Royal Navy, who set sail for the American continent. Michael Pascal renamed him Gustavus Vassa. In the years that followed, Olaudah became a great seaman and sailed around the world. His stops included the slave-trading islands ofthe West Indies, England, Ireland, Wales, France, Portugal, Italy, Central America, Georgia, Virginia, Philadelphia and New England. It seemed that he traveled everywhere except to where he really wanted to go, which was Africa. It was during these years that he learned the English language and values from a seaman by the name of Richard Baker. By 1759 Equiano had become fully articulate in the English language. He fought for the British during the seven-year war against France. Even though he had earned his freedom by fighting in the war, Pascal would not grant Equiano his freedom. Instead he confiscated all of Equianos books and sold him to the captain of a slave ship in 1763. His new owner, Robert King, would e ventually sell Equiano his freedom in 1766 for 70 pounds. Robert King asked Equiano to remain as his employee and Equiano did. This led him to Georgia where he was almost captured and resold into slavery. It was also during this time that Equiano got rid of the name Gustavus Vassa. In 1768, Equiano returned to London, England and began an apprenticeship to a hairdresser. It was also during this time that he became employed by Dr. Charles Irving. It was with Dr. Irving that Equiano would go to the North Pole in 1773 and barely escaped death when their ship struck an iceberg. In 1786 Equiano was appointed commissary for Stores for the Black Poor. This was a social outreach group of the British antislavery movement that saw returning blacks to Africa as the best way to end British slave trade (ONeale, 157). He was fired after five months because of a conflict he had with Joseph Irwin. This conflict drew criticism onto Equiano but he would regain his status in the abolition movement by publishing responses to the criticism in the British newspapers. In 1789, Equianos autobiography was published in London and by 1790 Equiano was fully involved in the antislavery movement in Britain. He petitioned the Queen and the Parliament to end the slavery. The following year the autobiography was published in America. It has been said no black voice before Frederick Douglass in his Narrative of 1845 spoke so movingly to American readers about inhumanity (Murphy,354). Equiano would finally settle and marry Susan Cullen on April 7, 1792. They had two girls who were named Ann Marie and Johana. Some sources say Equiano died in 1801 while others say 1797. We are not sure which one is correct. One of his daughters did die a few months after he did. His wife and other daughter then left the limelight and no record of them has been found. Equianos book has lasted over two hundred years and has gone through eight editions. And is still being called the most successful prose work writte n by an African in the Western World until the start of the American Civil War (ONeale, 157). .udd2ef95d09997ac2029699f348b6ae7f , .udd2ef95d09997ac2029699f348b6ae7f .postImageUrl , .udd2ef95d09997ac2029699f348b6ae7f .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .udd2ef95d09997ac2029699f348b6ae7f , .udd2ef95d09997ac2029699f348b6ae7f:hover , .udd2ef95d09997ac2029699f348b6ae7f:visited , .udd2ef95d09997ac2029699f348b6ae7f:active { border:0!important; } .udd2ef95d09997ac2029699f348b6ae7f .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .udd2ef95d09997ac2029699f348b6ae7f { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .udd2ef95d09997ac2029699f348b6ae7f:active , .udd2ef95d09997ac2029699f348b6ae7f:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .udd2ef95d09997ac2029699f348b6ae7f .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .udd2ef95d09997ac2029699f348b6ae7f .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .udd2ef95d09997ac2029699f348b6ae7f .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .udd2ef95d09997ac2029699f348b6ae7f .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .udd2ef95d09997ac2029699f348b6ae7f:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .udd2ef95d09997ac2029699f348b6ae7f .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .udd2ef95d09997ac2029699f348b6ae7f .udd2ef95d09997ac2029699f348b6ae7f-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .udd2ef95d09997ac2029699f348b6ae7f:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Madness and Insanity in Shakespeare's Hamlet - Ham Essay Olaudah Equiano I must say had a most interesting life as a slave. He has gone through almost every single event a slave could have gone through. The most interesting part of his journeys is his treatment as a slave. He at some points is treated well and doesnt know what to make of it as a slave. One example is his first owners used to let him sit at the table during dinnertime. In other points he experiences many of his own kind and the inhumane treatment they experience. But all in all Olaudah Equiano unlike many other slaves kept his composure and his humbleness towards all he met in his journeys. He never felt any anger towards his masters. After witnessing all the cruelties his masters committed on other slaves. The horrendous stories of cutting a mans leg of for running away or the half hanging of one slave and then burnt for attempting to poison his cruel master. (Equiano, 484) Olaudah Equiano had many views about slavery. I saw slavery in a very different viewpoint than many other slaves. Through his searching, Equiano found a personal relationship with God according to the Bible to be true. Influenced by God, but still discovering his own way, Equiano did not reject his culture or believe slavery was a good thing as much as he adapted to his new environment and made the most of it. As a sailor, Equiano had escaped many dangers, and it was these brushes with death that caused him to reflect deeply on his eternal state. (Equiano 1044) Equiano thought about death a lot during his hard life as a slave. During this time period people did not live like they did in todays world. Death came at any moment at any corner. He writes, the fear of eternity daily harassed my mind and fears of deathweighed me down. (Equiano 1045) As Equiano studied the Bible he learned that God is not just holding all above a fire waiting to drop them in. He came to an understanding that God is not just the God of Judgment, but also more importantly the God of grace and mercy. He believed in the invisible hand of God, which guided and protected him. This attitude helped Equiano View the unconverted people of the world in a very awful state, being without God and without hope. Strangely Equiano believed that God dies for us all on the cross. This helped Equiano believe that temporary earthly sl avery and spiritual salvation were better than a life of earthly freedom but spiritual death. (Equiano, 1049) Equiano never turned his back on his culture he simply adapted to survive in it. WORKS CITEDEquiano, Olaudah. 31 Types of Writing Jobs from Home (With Minimal Effort to Start)
Interested in working from home? Ive been an online writer for five years now and I make a living with writing jobs I do from home. Ive always loved writing and as a teen, I often wrote poems and short stories. I was also the student in college that loved writing research papers! Yes, I was that person! Did you know there are many different types of writing jobs from home? I didnt know that when I first started either. Over time though, I learned all the different types of freelance jobs for writers and what type of services they requested. To prepare you as an online writer, I want to share with you different types of writing you might do from home. You can pick one or several types of writing jobs from this list for your business. Writing Jobs from Home 1. Blog Writing Jobs Blogging is by far the most popular type of content online that business want. Itââ¬â¢s also the easiest to find work for since there are many job boards that cater to blog writing jobs. Blog posts are typically between 800-1500 words and can include certain keywords for ranking in Google, magnetic headlines to draw people in and a call-to-action at the end of a post. You can niche down your blog writing to focus on long-form blog writing which means producing blog posts between 2,000-5,000 words long. These writing jobs from home are usually in-depth and require insider industry knowledge. Generally, blog posts are conversational and are written for the audience. You could write blog posts for small businesses, brands, coaches or other entrepreneurs. The blog topics vary from providing educational content to something more entertaining. If you pick up blog writing jobs know that many businesses need this type of content on a consistent basis. So, blog writing is a great recurring gig. More than half of my clients require weekly blog content. Itââ¬â¢s consistent, reliable and fun to do. 2. Ghostwriting Jobs Ghostwriting is when you ââ¬â the ghost writer ââ¬â writes online content for businesses, brands, magazines or entrepreneurs and isnt credited for it. You donââ¬â¢t receive any credit for your writing, so you canââ¬â¢t display your piece on your portfolio or market it on social media as your own. Why would you ghostwrite if you want to get your name out there and land clients? Because itââ¬â¢s a highly lucrative field. You can charge up to 3x more for a ghostwritten piece than for a piece with your author byline. I have several ghostwriting clients and Iââ¬â¢m interested in obtaining even more. I find these clients are easy to please and pay well. 3. Article Writing Jobs Both magazines and websites alike depend on article writers to provide new and unique content. There are many types of writing jobs from home and it just comes down to what you are interested in and what youre experienced in. Articles are more in-depth than blog posts and are usually journalistic in nature. For example, it may require interviews or for you to go search out a story. I was asked to do a story about buying a car from a femaleââ¬â¢s perspective. This writing job required me to actually go to a dealership and test drive a car. Articles pay well ââ¬â upwards towards a $1 a word ââ¬â but theyââ¬â¢re not usually recurring. Some magazines publish monthly or quarterly, rather than weekly. I encourage you to research further and narrow down your field of writing. For example, if you are interested in writing copy, then you can choose to pursue Etsy sellers or bigger websites or even stores that need catalog copy. Maybe you are interested in op-ed pieces, then you can choose to look into publications and magazines for that type of copy. 4. Press Release Writing Jobs A press release is a written statement to the media. Itââ¬â¢s used by a business to announce accomplishments, scheduled events, a launch, new products or even sales accomplishments. They continually need talented press writers to turn out newsworthy content and to get it placed in media outlets. I was asked to write a press release for a new meal delivery service. They wanted to get the word out about their product launching in their city. Press releases are typically short ââ¬â 400 to 800 words ââ¬â but can be a couple of pages long. Thereââ¬â¢s usually a system to writing a press release, so once you do one, you can use the same template on other press releases. For example, publicity firms can charge hundreds of dollars just to write these types of press releases. Many of these companies charge $325 per release. That said, offering $200 or lower to write a press release would be a steal for businesses that want this type of content. 5. Technical Writing Jobs If you have a strong technology background, then technical writing would fit right into your writing niche. Thereââ¬â¢s a great demand for WordPress writing, coding tutorials, web development tutorials and much more. Technical writers can also write manuals for companies, policies and procedure documents, technical guides and handbooks, evaluation reports, and research reports. Typically, a business hires an online writer to make their dry and boring guide more user-friendly. So, itââ¬â¢s our job to bring a little conversational element to a businessââ¬â¢ guide. Technical writing can be a profitable writing service because thereââ¬â¢s a high demand for this writing, but not a lot of freelancers supplying it. 6. White Paper Writing Jobs Many businesses use white papers as a marketing tactic, much like case studies. These papers are informative and designed to show off the product or service of the company. One of my clients had me write a white paper for recruiters on the common mistakes they make when hiring new people. Papers like these are written in a more academic setting, without the fluff online writing may have. White papers are also lucrative ââ¬â that the average price for a white paper is $5000 to $7000 ââ¬â but they can be time-consuming and itââ¬â¢s not for everyone. White papers are also a one-off job and arent recurring unless you are already a writer for this client. This type of writing job from home, though, is highly profitable because it takes more skill to write a white paper than it is to write a blog post. 7. SEO Writing Jobs SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. Its purpose is to assist websites in ranking high in the Google search results. This is a big industry and many companies hire SEO businesses to help them with this. There are usually two types of clients seeking SEO content: Ones that require short writing pieces with relevant keywords placed throughout the post. Clients often batch these assignments and offer a low rate. For example, they may want 30 short posts for $10. Those types of writing jobs can be found on content mills or freelance market places like Upwork. The other writing job project may give you the keywords they want you to use and its your job to know where to place those keywords in your content to optimize that post for ranking in Google. These clients are typically good paying and value writing. If youââ¬â¢re new and not sure if youââ¬â¢re ready to make the leap into having a freelance business, you may want to consider doing some fast and small jobs like SEO writing. It will certainly give you the skills you need to write posts and it will introduce you to invoices and online payment systems. 8. B2C Writing Jobs This is business-to-customer writing that focusses on product-based content. This type of writing jobà is a little more fun and creative. You are writing directly from the business to the consumer. There would be few how-to types of content and more review, buying guides and tutorial-based content. For example, Walmart has a blog that focuses on B2C content. I enjoy writing B2C content because its more relaxed, conversational and the topic ideas for B2C is usually fun and creative. 9. B2B Writing Jobs This is business-to-business writing and tends to have quite a few rules and is less creative than B2C writing jobs. You are writing for a business to sell to other businesses. For example, writing for GoDaddy.com. There are different types of B2B writing jobs. The first is small brick and mortar businesses attempting to have an online presence or small online businesses. This can be your local auto insurance company or it could be a background security check firm. These small businesses usually hire ghostwriters to write for their blog or write their marketing content. The other camp is online businesses that cater to a large online audience and customer base. For example, I had a writing job for OptinMonster. My content spoke directly to small online business owners such as entrepreneurs and professional bloggers. Business to business writing is highly profitable and it is what has helped me make a living from writing. 10. Video Script Writing Jobs Even YouTube videos and commercials rely on script writing. Large websites who wish to expand its content into video will need freelance scriptwriters to help. And this is the perfect time to start looking at script writing jobs. The video marketing industry is an ever growing industry and it isnt stopping anytime soon. Entrepreneurs, bloggers, coaches and the like are creating videos ââ¬â for example with online courses ââ¬â and will seek out script writing to help their audience find the best way to learn their tactics. 11. Course Writing Jobs Piggybacking on script writing, you can also do some course writing jobs from home. As previously mentioned, businesses are opening up to a new content marketing strategy and using online learning to fulfill that space. Ive had previous clients wanting me to create course lessons for their digital marketing courses. These projects are usually huge projects that might take months to complete, but they are usually profitable for you! 12. Case Studies Many businesses use case studies as a marketing tactic to acquire more business. Case studies are used to tell the successes of their clients using their product or services. They demonstrate how a client found great results by using a particular product or service. Typically you would write a case study about an individual or a company. You may be asked to write a case study or use case studies in your content. For example, for one of my clients, they liked to feature a lot of case studies in their blog posts. I either researched the company or I interviewed one of the managers of the company. I thenà presented the analysisà of how a company achieved results in a certain part of their business. 13. Copywriting Jobs Stores need someone to write unique and engaging blurbs for all of their products. Copywriting uses the psychology of marketing to help businesses with promoting their brand and products. You may write landing pages, web copy, sales pages, call-to-actions, marketing campaigns or any type of content used to convert a user into a customer. Recently, I landed a copywriting job ââ¬â web copy ââ¬â and Iââ¬â¢m finding it a new experience to grow from. The only downside to copywriting is that itââ¬â¢s not recurring and often is a one-time gig. But, you might be surprised if the client is happy. They will contact you for other landing pages and marketing campaigns. The thing to remember with copywriting is that you are weaving in story-telling and writing to sell. 14. Email Marketing Writing Jobs Did you know that writing emails for companies is a big business? Writing email marketing campaigns is no joke. Businesses know that theà money is in the list, so having a highly conversion email is important for their business strategy. Email is where businesses cultivate warm leads and turn them into potential buyers. As an online writer for email marketing campaigns, you may be responsible for writing sales funnels, opt-in funnels and emails alerting subscribers of the latest deals and products. You would also be responsible for writing engaging newsletters and email headings. Many businesses depend on their email list to boost sales and increase customer interaction. 15. Magazine Writing Jobs Most of the content for magazine writing jobs will be article writing that is more journalistic than conversational. Your medium is things like trade publications, magazines, educational publications, and newspapers. Thereââ¬â¢s typically a certain style guide you have to follow like the Associated Press or Canadian Press. One of my first writing gigs was the online version of a cityââ¬â¢s newspaper. As such, I have to adhere to the Canadian Press way of writing. 16. Social Media Writing Jobs Some businesses rely heavily on their social media presence. They need to update their accounts every day, but this can be time-consuming for an entrepreneur or small business owner. While most companies wouldnââ¬â¢t just hire a freelance writer to do all their social media, you may be hired to do a couple of things such as: editing blog posts, writing blog posts and handling their social media account. Lauren Spear of Little Zotz Writingà is the editorial assistant at Copyblogger and she is in charge of their Twitter account. 17. Editing Jobs Editing is an easy addition to your freelance writing services since you already have to edit your own pieces before you submit them. There are generally three editing types you can perform for clients: Proofreading ââ¬â this means having a quick look at your content and checking for comma mistakes, spelling errors, or inconsistencies such as sometimes not capitalizing CTA in the piece. It doesnââ¬â¢t require much re-writing. Basic editing ââ¬â this requires more involvement than proofreading. On top of checking for spelling mistakes and punctuation mistakes, you are also checking stats and syntax. Developmental editing ââ¬â this is the most intrusive of all editing and the most expensive for businesses to hire out. With this type of editing, youââ¬â¢re changing entire sentences and paragraphs. Youââ¬â¢re adding new concepts and ideas. 18. Real Estate Writing Jobs Real estate agents need freelancers for a few different projects. For example, they may need writers experienced in SEO to help potential clients find their real estate site in their city. They also need writers to write engaging house listings that sell. As such, this type of content is industry-specific and requires a writer that knows the real estate industry inside and out. Because of this type of specific information, real estate writing jobs are highly profitable. 19. Product Description Writing Jobs Graphic design companies or printing companies often have clients that sell a wide array of products and goods. Many of these businesses seek out a writer that can produce highly optimized, SEO-driven product descriptions. If you have a knack for condensing information into 60-80 word blurbs, then you can niche yourself out as the product description writer! 20. Content Writing Jobs Content writing jobs from home are becoming more and more popular. With more people starting blogs every day, they are inadvertently learning the skills they need to be a content writer! Things like: Uploading content into a content management platform like WordPress Customizing their blog Creating lead magnets (free guides) to grow their email list Creating products and sales pages Writing blog posts to grow traffic and income All of these skills bloggers use can be used to help businesses with their content. From blog writing to writing lead magnets to growing their email list, there is no shortage of this type of writing jobs from home! 21. eCommerce Writing Jobs eCommerce companies have huge catalogs of products and big marketing budgets to get their brand out there. Many of these businesses seek out writers to write web copy for their products, buyer guides, brand guides, or category descriptions. Much of your writing might go to their distribution channels like Amazon or social media. 22. Gift Guide Writing Jobs Gift Guide writing jobs are a blend of product description writing and blog writing. Many brands and businesses use gift guides as a way to monetize their brand and share on social media. These guides need to be conversational and relatable to the people reading them. Instead of dry, feature-based content with no flair, gift guide writing jobs need a writer that is well versed in writing blogs and that understands online writing in general. One of my newest clients hired me for their gift guide campaign and their rate for an 1800 word gift guide is $500. This is a great writing gig for beginners and an easy way to gain some recurring writing jobs from home. 23. Grant Writing Jobs A grant writer creates research proposals that request funding from various government agencies. Grant writing is usually hired out by non-profits, universities, and the social service and healthcare field. A proposal involves writing the application, describing the reasons for funding and giving an overview of the applicant and its intentions. Grant writing has a steep learning curve to it, but once you pick it up, your help will be valuable (and profitable) to non-profit organizations. 24. Business Plan Writing Jobs New businesses and start-ups are launching every day. Just because someone is great at business does not mean they are a great wordsmith. Thats where you come in! If youve had experience in business planning and drafting up business plan proposals then this type of writing job can be your thing! 25. Legal Writing Jobs Law firms produce a lot of paperwork, so the help of a writer who knows legal lingo will be a great asset to any law firm. But for this profitable writing niche, you wont be able to fake it until you make it. You have to have had experience in a law firm or with legal writing to gain some writing jobs for lawyers. 26. News Writing Jobs A news writer is required to write the daily happenings before everyone else. Writing in this field is fast-paced and requires tight writing. I view this as the freelance journalist that travels or goes where the story goes. I researched my local newspaper to see if they hire freelance writers and you know what? They do. In this instance, they hire out stories and itââ¬â¢s your job to go interview the person or experience the story (like go to a soccer game) so you can write about it. While this was an awesome opportunity, at the time, it was something I couldnââ¬â¢t do (my schedule wouldnââ¬â¢t allow it). But, it was a great experience nonetheless. 27. Resume Writing Jobs Help others land the job of their dream while making some cash on the side. Many people need help with perfecting their resume and you can make that happen as a resume writer. While there are many resume writing service agencies available, you dont have to work under an agency. Having a writing job at home means you can contract the work out or offer it as a freelance service. I would head up schools, universities and friends family to find some potential gigs. 28. Quiz Writing Jobs One of the best remote writing jobs you can have is a quiz writing job. Believe it or not, but quizzes are becoming a very hot tool for brands and their social media marketing strategy. For example, Ramit Sethi of I Will Teach You to Be Rich uses a quiz as a way to gain subscribers to his email list. Many of these writing jobs can be found on social media 29. Greeting Card Writing Jobs An usual writing job you can do at home is creating greeting card blurbs for art and card companies. Finding these types of jobs might require some research online and social media. Simple running a Google search can help you find card companies that accepts paid submissions like: Calypso Cards RSVP Blue Mountain Arts 30. Book Writing Jobs You can start writing covers for books that you write for your own pleasure, but you can also write ebooks for websites and businesses. These are usually ghostwritten and allow the company to have something to give to consumers. A blogger or person might also want a book written about their life, business or product. They have a hard time writing it, so they hire it out to an online writer. The process of writing an eBook can be different for each gig. One gig may already have notes; you just have to combine them into a compelling story. Another person may want you to interview them and then use your notes to create an eBook. Still, others just need a short eBook for a ââ¬Å"freebieâ⬠they can give to their email subscribers. I wrote part of an eBook for a digital marketer. He supplied the points and I just expanded them. I never did eBook writing before because I assumed they were 60,000-word books and very time-consuming. It was a great learning experience and I am now open to taking on more book clients. 31. Web Writing Jobs A website writer writes content that you see on websites. The demand for it is higher than ever. Businesses of all stages and sizes ââ¬â whether itââ¬â¢s a new startup thatââ¬â¢s just tapping into the online world and creating a website, or an established company thatââ¬â¢s expanding and needs more pages on their site ââ¬â are looking for web content writers. As a web content writer, you would be working on a variety of pages, including (but not limited to) homepages, about pages, FAQs, product description pages, ââ¬Å"Why Us?â⬠pages, and more. Pricing varies depending on the length and depth of the site, but $50 to $75 per page is a VERY reasonable starting rate. Sites for Online Writing Jobs As you can see, many of these gigs need minimal effort from you. The Key Players of Australian Politics essays
The Key Players of Australian Politics essays The key players of Australian Politics are often in the spotlight, on the news, on the radio, even on prime time Logie award winning television shows. They promote their policies to the Australian public in their struggle to get into office. But in their quest for the top job, do they effectively carry out there positions in Australian Politics? The key players of Australian Parliament are The Prime Minister (The Hon. John Howard MP), The Cabinet, The Leader of the Opposition (Mark Latham MP), The Opposition Front Benchers, The Minor Parties, Independents and the Speaker of the House/ President of the Senate. Within our Westminster System they are considered the key players. As they put pressure on each other to govern the country just and fairly, do they do there job? Obviously all of the key players are vital to the Parliament, as there jobs cover the sections of the Parliament and keep things fair but what exactly do they do. The Prime Minister, has the informal role of Head of the Government, his main source of power comes from the ability to dismiss and promote Ministers, he is the face of the Australian Government, and is often in the news and papers. The Prime Minister is expected to be able to provide an explanation or comment on all areas of government activity. The Prime Minister is effective without a doubt, in relation to recent events, he has elaborated on the budget, and he continually provides insight on the War on Terrorism in Iraq. The Prime Minister also continually keeps pressure on his current Ministers, for example the treasurer to keep the public up to date on his budget release and the Labour Partys forth coming response. The Leader of the Opposition has the role of Head of the Opposition party, his role is an important one to play in parliament, and they may be able to influence the Governments decisions, policies and views. The Opposition can propose ideas for new laws to the Parliament, but unless th...

The Vietnam War, Conflict on the US Research Paper
The Vietnam War, Conflict on the US - Research Paper Example The U.S. spent great sums over 10 years on military actions in Southeast Asia. The money spent sending a military force overseas takes away needed funds for domestic purposes and usually accrues a debt that must be repaid, with interest over time, generally over many generations. Borrowing to fund wars increases the National Debt which damages the entire economy. The geopolitical realities resulting from the War created a multitude of undesirable effects. The U.S. lost political capital from the people of South Vietnam during the conflict when it incessantly bombed North Vietnam, an unexpected development that was detrimental to the war effort. The U.S. also lost credibility both at home and among all foreign nations following the outcome of the War. The neo-conservative ââ¬Å"war-hawkâ⬠philosophy was born during this era. Evidently the people who lived during and witnessed the Vietnam era did not learn the obvious lessons the War provided. The tough lesson learned from U.S. i nvolvement in Southeast Asia was that having the stronger military force does not ensure victory. Although an estimated three million enemy soldiers was killed compared to approximately 58,000 Americans the ââ¬Å"big dogâ⬠of the fight ultimately ran home humiliated and beaten with its tail between its legs. Due to the unprecedented media coverage of the conflict, the awful truths of the war were broadcast which caused the U.S. to quickly lose credibility in every country including its own. (Howell, 1984). ââ¬Å"The extensive bombing campaigns and numerous offensives caused massive amounts of destruction on the Vietnamese and their property which only served to alienate the indigenous community. It galvanized the enemy and opponents of the war in both Vietnam and America and led many to question the ethics of the campaigns.â⬠(Olney, 1990 p.80-85) The limits of American supremacy were plainly evidenced by the abuse of its military dominance. The U.S. gained many enemies while losing prestige and respect worldwide. Moreover, if the U.S. had never involved itself in Vietnam, the limitations of its armed forces would not be as evident and the U.S. would still today be considered as mightier and more effective than it really is therefore would carry more political influence than it currently does. However, this unfortunate truth is probably soon to be a moot issue because the U.S. status as the worldââ¬â¢s lone superpower is a short-lived situation. Great sums of money are needed to assemble and sustain a military force to maintain the ââ¬Å"superpowerâ⬠status, money which the U.S. could not afford then and does not have now. The biggest threat to national security is not the ââ¬Å"red menaceâ⬠as was warned of during the Vietnam era or the terrorist ââ¬Å"evil doersâ⬠of today. The National Debt (external), presently topping $13 Trillion, is seemingly a concern in theory only to elected leaders. However, it threatens to not simpl y weaken the military but to plunge the country into a ââ¬Å"third worldâ⬠status. The U.S. is still considered a sound investment and has a limitless ability to get loans without difficulty, but these loans must be repaid, with interest. ââ¬Å"Saudi Arabia, Japan, China and other countries own a large piece of America, a potentially disastrous prospect. One or a combination of creditor countries could cause a sudden and shocking reduction of the economy which would further increase the debt.â⬠(Okimoto, 2009) The Vietnam War divided America along philosophical battle lines. The older faction of the

MARKETING Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words - 2
MARKETING - Essay Example Marketing is not necessarily intrusive always. Marketing through a search engine, for instance, does not disrupt the behavior of the client as opposed to the advertisements that throng newspapers and web pages; in fact search engine marketing promotes non-intrusive marketing as it encourages consumers to search for the advertised product only. However, there is a general resentment towards marketing. This mainly stems from the power of advertisements and its manipulation of customers. The purpose of marketing is to improve the companyââ¬â¢s performance by advertising its services or products. Marketers often do that cunningly manipulating the target groups into buying the products. Stealth advertising, i.e. tricking people into using a service by product placements in media that people use widely, is disliked by people since it infringes upon the ethical rights of the consumers and fails to protect their interests. This can be broadcasted on the television or through the Internet on websites and by spam mail. One can see that it is not the marketing concept itself that is creating animosities; rather, it is the way through which the model is being executed that is giving rise to intrusive marketing. For marketing to be effective, it needs to have a customer-focused approach. This is achieved by the close collaboration of the top managerial figures. These managers play a role in promoting marketing by removing any cultural factors that impede organizational coherence and in turn affect the customer-focused marketing strategy. An example of the relationship between marketing and the authorities is the organization International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The IEC has a Council Board, made of top executive managers, which oversees and supervises all marketing strategies and regulates quality standards. There is a disparity in marketing theory and in marketing practice today. This is primarily due to the shift in marketing Marketing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4000 words Marketing - Essay Example The address of Coventry Business School is at the William Morris Building in the central campus. ââ¬Å"The building was established in 1916. Healthy Eating Essay Example for Free
Healthy Eating Essay I conducted research on a chosen topic for me to gain my secondary data, I research article on my chosen topic, printed them off and highlighted them in my appendix. I got the articles from books and online websites. I then produced a literature review of my articles. I also had to gain primary information which I got from my observations on 30 children at placement and 30 questionnaires send out to the parents but in order for me to do this I had to send out permission letters but before I was ale to do this I had to created my questionnaire and provision letter. Once I had all my permission letters and questionnaires back (managed to get 20 back), I collated my data and the produced charts by using bar charts, pie charts and tally charts. I was also able to carry out my observations because I had my permission slips and with this information I produced my data using bar charts, pie charts and tally charts. After producing all my charts, I had to analyse and summarise the date and find out the mode, range and median of each chart. I also produced my methodology, put into my appendix example of my questionnaire and permission letters as well as the printed out PowerPoint, say what topic I picked and why, the aims of my topic, what my sample target was and how many, who piloted my questionnaire and how I produced it, the ethical issues throughput my research project and confidentiality. An action plan was produced on each section in my research project by a grid which I filled out the dates of target completion and actual completion date. The last thing I did in my research project was state the strengths and weakness throughout the project, conclude what I have found out and reflect on the whole research project as well as having my bibliography which includes all the article I printed off, highlighted and reviewed. From carrying out this research project I found out that 13 children are healthy and 7 children are unhealthy out of the 20 children aged 4-5 years old. I also found out from my data that 4 year old boys are healthier than girls of that age and 5 year old girls are healthier than boys of that age. Another thing I found out was that 15 parents donââ¬â¢t follow the at well plate when providing their child with food however children are eating a variety of food from different food groups that are recurred for them to have a healthy diet. I also found out that children do eat fruit and the majority of parents donââ¬â¢t struggle to provide their child with a healthy diet as this can be seen in my data. Another thing I found out was that 15 parents donââ¬â¢t follow the at well plateà when providing their child with food. I chose to research the subject healthy eating because I believe it is important to give children a healthy lifestyle to help prevent and reduce their risk of anaemia, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and obesity in the future. My research will be carried out by observing 30 children at placement between the age of 4-5 years and questionnaires on the parents. In order for me to carry out observations and questionnaires I will need permission from the parents of the children. I will gain permission by writing permission letters to the parents and get the signatures back to say whether they will complete my questionnaire and allow their child to be observed. I will get any secondary data/ literature information on healthy eating from books, articles, pictures and online websites which I use to help me back up my research and results. The type of data that will be used in my project is qualitive and quantitive data. My primary data will be shown by bar charts, pie chart and tally chart. I will select my participants by using every parents and childââ¬â¢s observation and questionnaire in order for me to gain the best information and results possible. The one and most important thing I will need to consider when collecting any data id to make sure it is valid and reliable and I will check whether this is by investigating the source to see if it is relevant. The problems that might arise during this research project maybe the lack of information and relevance of information. The ethical issues that I have to consider are confidentiality; keeping my observations and questionnaire anonymous a the way through my research project, person may withdraw their participants at anytime during my project, some parents may not want to provide the information in the questionnaire and therefore will not take part or want their child to contribute in the observation, remember to value and not judge the participants and allow them all to take part by sticking to equal opportunities and be sensitive to the children and their needs by balancing their rights of needs to protection and participants through applying the Children Act 1989 and 2004 as well as the UNCRC 1989 to this. I found that the strengths of my chosen methodology were that I could have a wide range of the sample target, the person doesnââ¬â¢t feel pressured into answering any questions, it was easy to generate quantitative date and easy to analyse. I found that the weaknesses of my chosen methodology were that not all people could have told the truth when answering the questions, people obtained different interpretations of some questions. When observing the children the strength I found was that it was easy to record down what I wanted to gain my information on and the weakness I found was that not all children were present at the day that I wanted to observe them therefore I had to carry out the observation on a day where all the children were present. I managed to receive back all 30 copies that were sending out to the parents which had all been completed the correct way. I had to stick to confidentiality all the way throughout my research project and in order for me to do this, I kept all my questionnaire and observations anonymous. I kept my questionnaires anonymous. I kept my observations anonymous by not including any childââ¬â¢s name when gaining my information. I recorded my information in bar charts, tally charts and pie charts. The recording methods I used were very useful because I was able to read the information from it need in order for me to gain my results. The figures which show this are that 13 children are healthy and 7 children are not healthy in chart 12. It also shows on chart 29 that only 4 children are unhealthy from the ethnicity groups; 1 child is unhealthy out of the 7 British children, 1 Polish child is unhealthy out of the 3 Polish children, the 1 Spanish child is unhealthy and the 1 Jewish person is unhealthy which meant that the other 16 children all together from each ethnicity group were healthy. This could have an impact on how many children understood what a healthy diet is or what a balanced diet is as seen in chart 13 which shows that 9 children understand what a healthy diet is or what a balanced diet is, 6 ch ildren donââ¬â¢t understand what a healthy diet is or what a balanced diet is, 1 child only know what a healthy diet is, 1 child understand what a healthy diet is or what a balanced diet is sort of, 1 child is only understood some of it and the other one child should do. Another thing that could have an impact on how healthy children are is chart 21, showing that 17 parents do the household shopping and 3 parents donââ¬â¢t therefore could have an outcome in how healthy the children eat because the parents are buying the food thatà they will provide for their child to eat and these children could be given healthier food to eat e.g.: fruit and vegetables meaning they are eating a healthy diet. The fact that on 17 more children prefer to drink fizzy drinks to water didnââ¬â¢t have an impact on the majority of the 4-5 year olds having a healthy diet because we can see on chart 21 that 23 parents do the household shopping out of the 30 in the class and therefore these children could be given healthier food to eat e.g.: fruit and vegetables meaning they are eating a healthy diet. From chat 20 we see that 15 children mange to eat 5 fruit and vegetables per day and 5 children donââ¬â¢t eat 5 fruit and vegetable, however they many still mange to have some fruit during the day and this is than seen in chart 9 that 11 children have fruit and vegetable in their lunch boxes and on a daily basis. One thing that influenced the outcome of my research was most of the parents have jobs that enquire them to work with children or to look after peoples health, therefore because parents were doing this in their jobs, they know about why it is important to provide their child with a healthy diet and their children than was being encouraged to eat healthy and had a healthy diet. Another thing that influenced the outcome of my research is that the majority of parents provided their child with freshly cooked food meaning that the children were getting a variety of food to make up the healthy diet. 85% of the children were having a lot of energy during the day which had an influence on the outcome because if children eat a healthy food they are more likely to grow and develop better and donââ¬â¢t feel so sleepily during the day as seen in chart 23 that 16 children donââ¬â¢t feel sleepily during the day. The action plan that is in my appendix helped me complete my project as I was able to record the dates of completion on each section in the project and stick to it. It also helped me to manage my time effectively. I produced a questionnaire that links to my chosen topic healthy eating, where I wrote open-ended questions, yes and no questions and multiple answer questions in order for me to gain the information I want. I numbered each question 1 to 28 because the more questions in my questionnaire would give me more valid data to produce my charts and get reliable results. Once I had my questionnaire produced, a Level3 student in Health and Social Care piloted my questionnaire and found that there were no issues in my questionnaire. I therefore typed up my questionnaire and printed 30 copies for my sample target. I predict that if children aged 4-5 years old eat healthy, we should than find that they are having a healthy diet. If the reason for them having a healthy diet is eating a variety of food and getting the intake of mutations required from different food groups e.g.: fruit and vegetables. I expect to find that if parents provide their children with a healthy diet than they are more likely to eat healthy and have a healthy diet and if parents provide children with an unhealthy diet they are more likely to eat unhealthy and have an unhealthy diet. I expect to find the type of food that children eat on a daily basis to have an effect on how healthy they eat. I predict that if children are involved in helping with any type of preparing of food at home they are more likely to want to eat different kinds of food which means they will than be eating healthy. I expect to find, the ethnicity of children will not have an affect on how healthy they eat. I predict that if children have older siblings they will be influenced by their eating habits and they maybe passed down onto the younger sibling. I expect children who manage to have 5 fruit and vegetables per day will beà seen to have a healthier diet. From carrying out this research project on healthy eating I found out those 13 children are healthy out of the 20 children aged 4-5. I also found out that children do eat fruit and the majority of parents donââ¬â¢t struggle to provide their child with a healthy diet as this can be seen in my data. Another thing I found out was that 15 parents donââ¬â¢t follow the at well plate when providing their child with food however children are eating a variety of food from different food groups that are recurred for them to have a healthy diet. My research findings will help in my practice and support the development of my own practice when working with children and parents because I can be a good role model for the children and encourage the children that are not eating healthy to eat healthier, it gives me a better understanding of why children need to eat healthily and have 5 a day and I can back up my practice with evidence from NHS choices, The British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) and Food Standards Agency and I can also gain knowledge on anything I may not know. The perditions and expectations in my hypothesis about the findings of my research seem to be shown as testable statements because the whole outcome of the project gave me the results which i was hoping to find.
